Akito Murayama, born in March 1977 in Yokohama, Japan, is currently a Professor and Director of Urban Land Use Planning Unit at Department of Urban Engineering, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo. He is also a member of UTokyo Center for Climate Solutions. As an expert on urban land use planning and urban development, he is currently conducting several research projects on planning methodology for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

He teaches land use planning and district planning/design for undergraduate students, advanced urban planning and global planning for graduate students, and urban planning/design studios for both undergraduate and graduate students.
He has participated in many urban planning and environmental planning practices at local and prefectural government levels including Nagoya City Master Plan (2011 and 2020), Low Carbon City Nagoya Strategy Action Plan (2011 and 2024), Shizuoka City Master Plan (2016), Yokosuka City Master Plan (2016), Machida City Master Plan (2022), Nishitokyo City Master Plan (2024) and Mie Prefecture Urban and Regional Master Plans (2017-2018). He also supports stakeholders in Nishiki 2 Low-Carbon Community Development Project in Nagoya City. He serves as an urban planning committee director in Nishitokyo City, Yokosuka City, Kamakura City, Misato City and Shibayama Town.

He enjoys urban cycling in his free time. He owns 6 bikes (LeMond-road, Merida-gravel, Bianchi-Cross, besv-electric, CarryMe-foldable, Schwinn-mountain).
